Please read below to learn about the wonderful cultural arts programs that are provided to students in the East Hanover school district thanks to the generosity of those who participate in the various PTA-sponsored fundraisers throughout the year:
Frank J. Smith School Cultural Arts Program - 2010-2011
North, South, East and Jim West - presented by Theaterworks USA A multifaceted puppet production introducing children to three different cultures: China, North American Indian and African tales in a fun and interactive performance. Audience: Entire school assembly (two 45 minute assemblies) Date: January 27, 2011 10:00am and 1:30pm Dennis Kobray as Scott Joplin - presented by Meet the Musicians In honor of Black History Month The music of America in the early twentieth century was Ragtime, and the King of Ragtime was Scott Joplin. Dennis gives a dramatic presentation of storytelling and music as he becomes Scott Joplin. Children discover the feelings, music, life and history of this time period. Audience: Entire school assembly (one 55 minute assembly) Date: February 8, 2011 morning performance Kits Interactive Theater - Pocahontas Vision Quest Pocahontas's Vision Quest, set in Virginia in 1616, unveils the lifestyle of Native American tribes. Students and teachers explore their language, customs and traditions during this 45 minute interactive assembly. Before Pocahontas sets off on her vision quest, her father, Chief Powhatan insists that she prepare properly. A Native American folktale is shared, as well as the friendship dance with John Smith (and the entire body of students). Audience participants harvest the planting mounds (corn, beans and squash) and Pocahontas's "bothers and sisters" test their bravery in a bat-filled cave. She then plays a creative imagination game before she departs on her quest. Audience: Entire school assembly (two 45 minute assemblies) Date: March 11, 2011 10:30am and 1:00pm
Author Visit Planning is in the works to bring in a popular children's book author for the 1st and 2nd grade classes. Audience: 1st/2nd grades Date: April 14th & 15th Yes We Can! - Cris Johnson - motivational speaker Motivational program helps kids to understand why it's who we are on the inside that matters. Character Education campaign along with magic and fun. Audience: Entire school assembly (two 45 minute assemblies) Date: April 10:00am and 1:30pm
DinoMan - How do we know dinosaurs existed? What is a fossil? How are they made? Join the paleontologist and his pet dinosaur on a journey that concludes with three life-size dinosaurs. Audience: Entire school assembly (two 45 minute assemblies) Date: May 11, 2011

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge - Outdoor Education Program
NJ Watershed Ambassador, will come to Central School to speak to the 5th
grade students about pollution in our environment. He will spend 30
minutes in each class over the two-day period.
Audience: 5th Grade
Date: April 12-13
Ron McBee - 10-day musical residency.
This residency offers a musical global studies adventure as students
discover the limitless array of sounds available to the percussionist.
African instruments and their new world offspring are used to explore
and experience music principles, multi-cultural studies, instrument
making or geography. The students will create their own percussion
instrument and Ron will perform on the final day of the residency.
Audience: 4th Grade

Caren Frost Olmstead - Muralist
Book illustrator and artist, Caren Frost Olmstead will come to Central
school for an eight-day residency where she will paint a mural with the
5th grade students.

Joanna Pang Atkins- Multi-Cultural Dance Residency
A 9-day dance residency where the students learned folk dances
representing different countries and cultures, while also learning about
history, geography and music. Each class learns a different dance and
then all classes learn one common dance, all of which are performed at a
culminating assembly program for the school and parents. All classes
perform in full costume, and each dance segment is introduced with a
description of the country of origin and the history of the dance.

Author Visit - Lisa Funari
Garden State Author, Lisa Funari will come to speak to the 4th and 5th
grade students about the research for her book about New Jersey.

Middle School Cultural Arts Program 2010-2011
Creative writing workshop - Dar Hosta A multi-media presentation shows students how collage artist and educator, Dar Hosta, creates books from idea to finished product. The presentation will be conducted during a one hour whole class presentation and then in 3 - 40 minute, hands on workshops. Audience: 6th grade Date: May 31
Philadelphia Class Trip - students will attend a 2-day/evening program. Cultural Arts will subsidize this trip by providing admission into the Franklin Institute Science Museum to see a special exhibit. Audience: 7th grade Date: May 2009
My Heart in a Suitcase - presented by Arts Power A performance to follow the completion of the 8th grade curriculum with the Diary of Anne Frank. This performance is a tribute to the strength of the human spirit. Arts Power hopes to touch the hearts and minds of old and young alike by adapting a survivo's story, to inspire audiences to read and learn more about the Holocaust by weaving an emotional bond through art. Audience: 8th grade Date: May 23, 2011 Teen Dating Violence Awareness Program - presented by the JBWS of Morris County One out of three teens is in an abusive dating relationship, yet over eighty percent of their parents are unaware that their children are involved in such a situation. This comprehensive multi-media presentation will alert students to the dangers of power and control as a precursor to domestic violence and will provide tools to assist students to recognize and/or leave an abusive relationship. Chorus and Band Performance Competition Partial funding of the performance opportunity for band and chorus at venues featuring judging of the performances. Audience: 6th, 7th & 8th grade band and chorus members Date: May 2011
Signature Project - performance to follow a morning of standardized testing. Patrick Dunning presents an amazing multimedia show combining art, music and technology. The live performance offers the opportunity for the audience to join over 300,000 people whose signatures already comprise the fabric of this monumental work. Audience: 6th 7th & 8th grade Date: May 13, 2011
