Please support the efforts of the PTA Fundraising.   $25,000 is needed to fund just the cultural arts programs for all 3 schools.

Please read below to learn about the wonderful cultural arts programs that are provided to students in the East Hanover school district thanks to the generosity of those who participate in the various  PTA-sponsored fundraisers throughout the year:

Cultural Arts Program – 2008-2009

Charlotte Austin – Storyteller —January 14, 2009

Stories in griot tradition – Master storyteller combines traditional African music and stories to engage the children in a lively presentation.

Audience: Entire school assembly

Kits Interactive Theater – Colonial Times—February 2, 2009

Original, authentic portrayals by award-winning actress, writer and choreographer Kitty Jones feature exquisite costumes along with period props, dance and music. With so much creativity, integrity and wit, adults have as much fun as the kids. Pennsylvania, 1730s – Come celebrate spring with servant Katie Cotswold in this young Colonial village. Meet the townsfolk, join in the chores, games and frolics, and take a turn in the Maypole dance.

Queen Nur presents Sweet Potato Pie – in honor of Black History Month—March 9, 2009

Incomparable storyteller Queen Nur presents a tasty treat of stories, songs and dance celebrating African-American heritage accompanied by African instruments. This highly energetic and interactive performance will delight as well as enlighten.

Audience: Entire school assembly (afternoon Kindergarten is invited to the morning performance)

Star Lab March 2009

The Star Lab is a portable planetarium. The large bubble is set up in the gym. A light is shown on the ceiling of the bubble and the children can observe the constellations and the milky way. All the grades have age-appropriate follow up materials which are worked on in the classroom.

Jenkinsons Aquarium – Penguin Show—Tentative June

A live penguin and his trainer from Jenkinson's Aquarium will visit Frank J. Smith School. His trainer will explained the typical penguin habitat and share many interesting penguin facts with the students.

Audience: 1st & 2nd grade only

Central School

Cultural Arts 2008-2009

Judy Langille – Artist Residency— January and February 2009

Artist, Judy Langille, will be coming to Central School for a 10 day residency in quilt making. Students will learn the history of quilt making and will also gain an understanding of the quilt design process using different colors and textures. Pictures of the 5th graders along with parent and grandparent volunteers were in the FlorhamParkHanover This week newspaper on March 4, 2009.  Congrats!

Audience: 5th Grade

Ron McBee – 10 day musical residency February and March 2009

This residency offers a musical global studies adventure as students discover the limitless array of sounds available to the percussionist. African instruments and their new world offspring are used to explore and experience music principles, multi-cultural studies, instrument making or geography. The students will create their own percussion instrument and Ron will perform on the final day of the residency.

Audience: 4th Grade

Joanna Pang Atkins - Multi-Cultural Dance Residency— May 2009

A 9 day dance residency where the students learned folk dances representing different countries and cultures, while also learning about history, geography and music. Each class learns a different dance and then all classes learn one common dance, all of which are performed at a culminating assembly program for the school and parents. All classes perform in full costume, and each dance segment is introduced with a description of the country of origin and the history of the dance.

Audience: 3rd Grade

Cultural Arts Program 2008-2009

Playwrights Theater - creative writing workshop

The Playwrights Theater will come in for a one to two-day writing residency. The artist outlines a formula for writing any type of poetry and/or prose. The artist will help the students create stories of their own.

Audience: 6th grade

Philadelphia Class Trip – April 2009

Students will attend a 2-day/evening program. Cultural Arts will subsidize this trip by providing admission into the Franklin Institute Science Museum to see a special exhibit.

Audience: 7th grade

Faustworks Mask Messenger –April 29, 2009

Performance to follow a morning of standardized testing. This witty and thought-provoking performance presents a kaleidoscope of character transformations brought to life through body movements. The performance will provide audiences with a cultural, historical, and artistic overview of the use of masks throughout the world.

Audience: 7th & 8th grade

Right to Dream – in honor of Black History Month— February 20, 2009

This program presented by Living Voices is a compelling story of a young person’s coming of age in Mississippi during the 1950’s and 1960’s. This program illuminates the issues of civil rights and leads audiences to understand how the fight against prejudice has shaped our history.

Audience: 6th, 7th & 8th grade

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Program – presented by the JBWS of Morris County—March 18, 2009

Daytime presentation for the students, Evening presentation 7:45pm following PTA Meeting

One out of three teens is in an abusive dating relationship, yet over eighty percent of their parents are unaware that their children are involved in such a situation. Learn how to recognize the warning signs of dating abuse, and how to talk to your child about developing healthy relationships.  This comprehensive multi-media presentation will alert adults to the dangers of power and control as a precursor to domestic violence and will provide tools to assist parents in guiding their sons and daughters to recognize and/or leave an abusive relationship.

Audience: 8th grade

 

Chorus and Band Performance competition — May 2008

Partial funding of performance opportunity for band and chorus groups at venues featuring independent judging of performance.

Audience: Chorus and Band members (approximately 100 students)
